  • Hong Kong's relationship with Australia

Ties between Hong Kong and Australia are likely to continue to grow.

    • Hong Kong and Australia share a common outlook and values on matters such as personal freedoms and the rule of law, and opposition to the death penalty.
    • Hong Kong and Australia have a shared commitment to open markets and trade liberalisation, and both are members of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) and Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC).
    • While Australia and Hong Kong do not have a free trade agreement, Hong Kong's low trade barriers make it an easy market for Australian businesses to access.

Ties between Hong Kong and Australia go back as far as the mid-19th century. Today, shared commercial interests and significant people-to-people links mean the relationship remains strong, and thanks to Hong Kong's central position in Asia and familiarity to Australians, ties between Hong Kong and Australia are likely to continue to grow into the future.

As Hong Kong is a Special Administrative Region of China, the official relationship between Australia and Hong Kong is part of the broader Australia-China relationship. However, while Beijing assumes ultimate responsibility for Hong Kong's relations with other countries, under the 'one country, two systems' principle, Hong Kong enjoys considerable autonomy.

In particular, it has some leeway in trade and economic ties. Australia and Hong Kong both maintain representative offices in each other's territories. The Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office represents the territory's interests in Australia, while the Australian Consulate-General in Hong Kong manages the substantial commercial and people-to-people links between Australia and Hong Kong, dealing directly with the government of Hong Kong.
