Join us for the third round of The China Digital Economy Academy program, a comprehensive digital eCommerce training program designed to accelerate your business in China. 

As the home of technology giants Baidu and Tencent, China has one of the world’s fastest growing digital economies and a range of eCommerce platforms.

We have seen and experienced how COVID-19 has accelerated the shift to a digital marketplace, and nowhere more quickly than China. Organisations that want to succeed in China must build new capabilities to navigate the opportunities as China’s digital landscape continues to grow, develop and evolve at a rapid pace.

This program aims to promote and strengthen the understanding and engagement between Australia and China, by helping Australian brands and small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) that already sell in China or have China on their roadmap, to further benefit from China’s digital eCommerce opportunities. Through this program you will:

  • Deepen your understanding of China’s rapidly evolving eCommerce platforms.
  • Learn how to navigate and stand out in this fast-paced digital landscape.
  • Build practical capability and gain expert tips to position your business for long-term success.
  • Gain exclusive access in the sessions to leading digital and eCommerce experts from Alibaba, China Skinny, The Gaibo Agency, Polaris Media, RedFern Digital, RooLife Group + more.
  • Undertake exclusive sessions on setting up on Alibaba, tapping into consumers trends  and preferences, Intellectual Property in China, engaging with Key Opinion Leaders, working with eCommerce enablers and setting up and using WeChat.
  • Have access to business matching opportunities, introductions to eCommerce enablers, and consultations with in-country experts from your local state government and Austrade for eligible brands and SMEs.

Navigate China's Digital Economy

The China Digital Economy Academy is supported by The National Foundation for Australia-China Relations (an Australian Commonwealth Government initiative) in partnership with Austrade and our channel partners, Department for Trade and Investment (SA), Department of State Growth (TAS), Invest and Trade Western Australia, Global Victoria, Investment NSW and Trade and Investment Queensland - Asialink Business has developed a series of programs to promote and strengthen understanding and engagement between Australia and China, by helping Australian brands and small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) already engaged in China or have China on their roadmap, to further benefit from China’s digital eCommerce opportunities. The program will:

  • Accelerate understanding of the eCommerce and digital landscape in China
  • Build Australian SME capability to succeed in the Chinese eCommerce market.

  • Program Outline

    The China Digital Economy Academy program comprises of seven modules focusing on two core areas:

    • eCommerce in China
    • Building China Cultural Capabilities

    The modules are also accompanied by specialised deep dive sessions. It is essential for brands and SMEs to attend all 7 modules to be eligible for business matching opportunities, introductions to eCommerce enablers and consultations with in-country experts from your local state government agency and Austrade. You will also receive a Credly digital certification.

    China eCommerce modules: Dates and time options (you only need to select one at registration).

    Module 1: Doing business on China's eCommerce platforms.

    • Business considerations on platform selection and partner selection
    • Logistic solutions
    • Deep dive session: 28 October - 1pm to 2pm (AEDT): Alibaba’s business development managers will provide specific advice across these sector verticals:
    • Healthcare, fashion, and pet
    • Cosmetics, personal care, and home
    • Mother and infant, food and 3C

    Module 2: Understanding the Chinese digital and mobile consumers.

    • Deep dive session: 11 November - 1pm to 2pm (AEDT):  Intellectual Property with Charlotte Trinh, Counsellor (Intellectual Property), Australian Embassy China

    Module 3: Digital and social marketing in China.

    • Digital and social media landscape
    • Key social marketing platforms and latest trends in digital/social marketing
    • Influencer marketing via KOLs and KOCs by Polaris Media
    • Approach to media mix, in-house versus marketing agency approach
    • Working with a local marketing agency to drive eCommerce results by RedFern Digital
    • Deep dive session: 18 November – 1pm to 2pm (AEDT): Understand how brands can approach and work with Key Opinion Leaders. The session will be delivered by Jessica Xue and Garry Burns, Founders, Gaibo Agency

    Module 4: Masterclass on eCommerce strategies.

    Module 5: Understanding Chinese business culture.

    • Insight into China – society, context and culture through intercultural theories and frameworks

    • Key business cultural drivers- “the why behind the behaviour"

    • Practical cultural concepts which inform business interactions when dealing with Chinese stakeholders

    • Deep dive session: 2 December - 1pm to 2pm (AEDT): This 60-minute workshop, will guide participants through WeChat’s main functions and features in an engaging and interactive online session. This session aims to assist participants with a business background to make the most of the app to enhance their communication and ‘guanxi’ (relationship) with Chinese co-workers, clients, stakeholders, and business partners. Participants attending this session will:
    • Gain a deeper understanding of the use of WeChat
    • Become more familiar with WeChat’s interface
    • Learn how to navigate WeChat’s basic features
    • Utilise key functions to enhance engagement with WeChat users 
    • Workshop Requirements: BYD (Bring Your Device): Participants are required to bring their own mobile device. Download the app required and setup your account before the workshop.

    Module 6: Doing business in China in a virtual environment - 6A and 6B.

    Dates and times (both days are mandatory):

    5 and 6 December – 9am to 11am (AEDT) OR                                                            7 and 8 December - 3pm to 5pm (AEDT)

    • Key cultural perspectives and themes in China
    • Unpacking the challenges presented by working /engaging virtually with Chinese stakeholders
    • Establishing credibility and building trust virtually with your Chinese counterparts
    • Addressing cross-cultural virtual collaboration with your Chinese stakeholders
    • Building the toolkit of techniques and approaches to engage virtually with Chinese stakeholders and project teams

    Module 7: Negotiation in a Chinese context - 7A and 7B.

    Andy Jiang is a consultant and a public speaker specialising in Asia, with a focus on China. Over the past few years, Andy has provided extensive strategic consulting, industry training and project management services to Australian businesses engaged in cross-border trade and investment.

    Prior to establishing his own business, Andy was the general manager of Tourism Australia’s operation in China, responsible for growing China to become the largest and the most valuable source market for the Australian visitor economy. Prior to that, Andy ran the China advisory unit at Deloitte and helped Australian businesses to secure strategic investments.

    A Shanghai native, Andy has studied and worked in China, the United States, France, Singapore, Russia, and Australia. Andy is fluent in Mandarin, has a Chartered Financial Analyst designation, and received his MBA from INSEAD. In his current capacity, Andy is the regional director of Asia Pacific for IE University, a leading European academic institution based in Madrid.

    Julia Gong is one of Australia's leading cross-cultural educators and advisors, with over 15 years' language and cross-cultural training experience, and is a key facilitator for Asialink Business. Julia’s research interests are in cross-cultural communication, non-verbal communication and personalised learning. She is also an experienced course developer and TV/radio program presenter.

    Julia’s negotiation skills, strong communication skills and extensive contacts both in China and Australia ensure that she can provide a current and accurate perspective on the China landscape and mindset.

    Together with Asialink, Julia has developed and delivered an extensive range of programs for individuals and companies in the professional services, banking, government, retail, and education sectors, in particular for the established Asia Education Foundation’s Bridge Program where she has led the establishment of over 100 sister school relationships. Julia also has experience in training representatives from both small and medium enterprises and large corporations and is a wonderful bridge between Australian and Chinese culture.

    Andrew Lee born in Australia and living the past 15 years in China, Andrew Lee personally embodies Australian-Chinese culture. He is an expert facilitator on cross-cultural commercial negotiations.  

    Andrew has expertise in cross-border commercial dispute resolution with Chinese counterparts. From 2016-2019, Andrew was based in Shanghai as Chief China Representative of JAMS, one of the world’s largest providers of commercial arbitration and mediation. He had regular interaction with Greater China’s top dispute resolution providers such as CIETAC, BAC, SCIA, SHIAC and HKIAC. He was responsible for dialogue with the Supreme People’s Court and major Chinese law firms. His knowledge about a spectrum of dispute resolution techniques, his insight into Chinese institutions and his understanding of the commercial legal environment of China has been invaluable to western-based clients and legal entities.  

    Andrew has delivered a wide range of capability development programs to public and private organisations throughout Australia. He has taught at the top Universities across Asia, including Peking University, Tsinghua University and Singapore Management University. Participants in Andrew’s workshops represent Forbes 100 companies across a variety of sectors including law, hi-tech hardware and software, real estate, pharmaceuticals, and agri-business. He has been invited to speak and train across Greater China, the United States, Europe, and the African continent.  

  • Fees

    The program is valued at $4,500. Generous funding from The National Foundation for Australia-China Relations (an Australian Commonwealth Government initiative) allows us to offer this program at no cost.

    To be eligible for business matching opportunities, introductions to eCommerce enablers and consultations with in-country experts from your local state government agency and Austrade, brands and SMEs will need to attend all 7 modules of the program. You will also receive a Credly digital certification.

    Eligibility criteria:

    • Must be currently engaged in business with China or have China on their roadmap.
    • Must be a registered Australian business/ organisation.

    Entry into the program is competitive and places are limited. Registration of Interest through Eventbrite does not guarantee a place in the overall program. Our team will assess your application and be in contact with the relevant program details if you are selected.
