Join us for the fourth round of The China Digital Economy Academy program, a comprehensive digital eCommerce training program designed to accelerate your business in China. 

As the home of technology giants Baidu and Tencent, China has one of the world’s fastest growing digital economies and a range of eCommerce platforms.

We have seen and experienced how the pandemic has accelerated the shift to a digital marketplace, and nowhere more quickly than China. Organisations that want to succeed in China must build new capabilities to navigate the opportunities. As China’s borders reopen to international business's the digital landscape continues to grow, develop and evolve at a rapid pace.

This program aims to promote and strengthen the understanding and engagement between Australia and China, by helping Australian brands and small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) that already sell in China or have China on their roadmap, to further benefit from China’s digital eCommerce opportunities. Through this program you will:

  • Deepen your understanding of China’s rapidly evolving eCommerce platforms.
  • Learn how to navigate and stand out in this fast-paced digital landscape.
  • Build practical capability and gain expert tips to position your business for long-term success.
  • Gain exclusive access in the sessions to leading digital and eCommerce experts from Alibaba, Polaris Media, RedFern Digital, RooLife Group, The Gaibo Agency, Yaru Ventures + more.
  • Undertake exclusive sessions on setting up on Alibaba, tapping into consumers trends and preferences, Intellectual Property in China, engaging with Key Opinion Leaders, working with eCommerce enablers, setting up, and using WeChat.
  • Have access to business matching opportunities, introductions to eCommerce enablers, and consultations with in-country experts from government agencies for eligible brands and SMEs.

Navigate China's Digital Economy

The China Digital Economy Academy is supported by The National Foundation for Australia-China Relations (an Australian Commonwealth Government initiative),  Austrade and our channel partners, Global Victoria, Department of State Growth (TAS), The Department of Industry, Tourism and Trade (NT), and Trade and Investment Queensland - Asialink Business has developed a series of programs to promote and strengthen understanding and engagement between Australia and China, by helping Australian brands and small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) already engaged in China or have China on their roadmap, to further benefit from China’s digital eCommerce opportunities. The program will:

  • Accelerate understanding of the eCommerce and digital landscape in China
  • Build Australian SME capability to succeed in the Chinese eCommerce market.

  • Program Outline

    The China Digital Economy Academy program comprises of seven modules focusing on two core areas:

    • eCommerce in China
    • Building China Cultural Capabilities

    The modules are also accompanied by specialised deep dive sessions. On completion of the program, there will be business matching opportunities for eligible businesses through government agencies. You will also receive a Credly digital certification on attending a minimum of four modules.

    Welcome and Connections

    Dates and times:

    25 August - 1pm to 2pm (AEST)

    Welcome remarks and an overview of the program journey. An opportunity to connect with fellow program members through a deep dive session of setting up, connecting and establishing a group on the Chinese super app, WeChat. Be part of the online cohort who will be able to interact with each other, eCommerce experts and Asialink Business professionals, as you move through this highly practical and capability uplifting program over the next 7 weeks. A must attend to set yourself up for success. ​

    This workshop will guide participants through WeChat’s main functions and features in an engaging and interactive online session. Participants attending this session will:

    • Gain a deeper understanding of the use of WeChat
    • Become more familiar with WeChat’s interface
    • Learn how to navigate WeChat’s basic features
    • Utilise key functions to enhance engagement with WeChat users 
    • Workshop Requirements: BYD (Bring Your Device): Participants are required to bring their own mobile device. Download the app required and setup your account before the workshop.

    Module 1: Doing business on China's eCommerce platforms.

    Dates and times:

    29 August - 9am to 11am (AEST) OR
    31 August - 3pm to 5pm (AEST)

    • The state of play: eCommerce in China
    • Major eCommerce platforms
    • Business considerations on platform selection and partner selection
    • Logistic solutions
    • Deep dive session: 1 September - 1pm to 2pm (AEST): Alibaba’s business development managers will provide specific advice across these sector verticals:
    • Healthcare, fashion, and pet
    • Cosmetics, personal care, and home
    • Mother and infant, food and 3C

    Module 2: Understanding the Chinese digital and mobile consumers.

    Dates and times:

    5 September - 9am to 11am (AEST) OR
    7 September - 3pm to 5pm (AEST)

    • Chinese digital and mobile consumers
    • Rise of Millennials and Generation Zs
    • Targeting Chinese consumers by Yaru Ventures
    • Product localisation - brand, price and experience.
    • Deep dive session: 8 September - 1pm to 2pm (AEST):  Tapping into consumer preferences and trends.

    Module 3: Digital and social marketing in China.

    Dates and times:

    12 September - 9am to 11am (AEST) OR
    14 September - 3pm to 5pm (AEST)

    • Digital and social media landscape
    • Key social marketing platforms and latest trends in digital/social marketing
    • Influencer marketing via KOLs and KOCs by Polaris Media
    • Approach to media mix, in-house versus marketing agency approach
    • Working with a local marketing agency to drive eCommerce results by RedFern Digital
    • Deep dive session: 15 September – 1pm to 2pm (AEST): Understand how brands can approach and work with Key Opinion Leaders. The session will be delivered by Jessica Xue and Garry Burns, Founders, Gaibo Agency.

    Module 4: Masterclass on China eCommerce strategies.

    • Developing a successful cross-border eCommerce strategy

    • Deep dive session: 22 September - 1pm to 2pm (AEST): Navigating through China’s IP System with Charlotte Trinh, Counsellor (Intellectual Property), Australian Embassy Beijing.

    Module 5: Negotiation in a Chinese context.

    26 September - 9am to 11am (AEST) OR
    28 September - 3pm to 5pm (AEST)

    Deep dive session: 29 September - 1pm to 2pm (AEST): Negotiations in China.

    Module 6: Understanding Chinese business culture.

    5 October - 3pm to 5pm (AEDT)

    • Insight into China – society, context and culture through intercultural theories and frameworks

    • Key business cultural drivers- “the why behind the behaviour"

    • Practical cultural concepts which inform business interactions when dealing with Chinese stakeholders

    • Deep dive session: 6 October - 1pm to 2pm (AEDT): How to succeed in cross border eCommerce in China through eCommerce enablers.

    Module 7: Doing business in China (virtually & In-person).

    10 October - 9am to 11am (AEDT) OR
    12 October - 3pm to 5pm (AEDT)

    • Key cultural perspectives and themes in China
    • Unpacking the challenges presented by working /engaging virtually with Chinese stakeholders
    • Establishing credibility and building trust virtually with your Chinese counterparts
    • Addressing cross-cultural virtual collaboration with your Chinese stakeholders
    • Building the toolkit of techniques and approaches to engage virtually with Chinese stakeholders and project teams
    • Deep dive session: 13 October - 1pm to 2pm (AEDT): Navigating business in China.

    Andy Jiang is a consultant and a public speaker specialising in Asia, with a focus on China. Over the past few years, Andy has provided extensive strategic consulting, industry training and project management services to Australian businesses engaged in cross-border trade and investment.

    Prior to establishing his own business, Andy was the general manager of Tourism Australia’s operation in China, responsible for growing China to become the largest and the most valuable source market for the Australian visitor economy. Prior to that, Andy ran the China advisory unit at Deloitte and helped Australian businesses to secure strategic investments.

    Julia Gong is one of Australia's leading cross-cultural educators and advisors, with over 30 years' language and cross-cultural training experience, and is a key facilitator for Asialink Business. Together with Asialink, Julia has developed and delivered an extensive range of programs for individuals and companies in the professional services, banking, government, retail, and education sectors, in particular for the established Asia Education Foundation’s school partner program where she has led the establishment of over 100 sister school relationships. Julia also has experience in training representatives from both small and medium enterprises and large corporations and is a wonderful bridge between Australian and Chinese culture.

    Andrew Lee Born in Australia with over 2 decades of lived-in experience in China, Andrew Lee specialises as an expert negotiation coach for Australian private and public sector organisations seeking collaborations with Chinese counterparts. He shares his knowledge about Australian and Chinese business negotiation culture and advice for improving outcomes through highly practical, engaging and immediately useful workshops. He understands the importance of remaining at the forefront of modern developments, such as how technology,  online interactions and the impact of Covid have changed the nature of high-stakes cross-cultural negotiations.

    The program is valued in excess of $3,000.

    Funding from The National Foundation for Australia-China Relations (an Australian Commonwealth Government initiative) allows us to offer Round four of this program at a discounted rate. Places are strictly limited for this round so register now to secure your place.
